Trustees Report:  As of 3/31/17 there was $35,680.67 in the Endowment Fund.

Moderator’s Report: Chris Thomas
Chris’ reported included a lot of items related to updating the sanctuary to a multipurpose room.

Lanny suggested that we go around the meeting so each individual comment with their reaction on the new look.
Some made comments and some were ok and some were not ok with what is going on.

What is happening:  The child care center is turning the sanctuary into a multipurpose room.

Lanny talked about three steps of the process that we need to think during this time.

Each person has a different feeling of what is going on.
We all need to listen to each other and pray.
Where is God in this? What is God saying to this congregation?  How is God guiding us?  God is teaching us.

Lanny mentioned that Connie is willing to work with us on arranging the sanctuary.   We then discussed an alternative during the summer months is to worship outside.  We talked about some of the logistics of worshiping outside.

Christian Education: Melissa Waskiewicz / Steve Pavich
Melissa was happy that we had some visiting children.  She got feedback that the children want to do more craft-type of things in Sunday school.  Lanny commented how he likes the way that Melissa guides the children.

Missions & Outreach:
Open and Affirming Congregation – Melissa will email the wording of the Mission Statement to the council before the June council meeting.
The conference has resources to help us if needed.

Men’s Ministry – There is no update.
We discussed other options for the Fountain of Coins:

SAFE Together: Anyone and everyone is safe here.  It is a small, local social organization.
Robert Lewis house in Eagan is a safe place for abused women and their children.
Chris named off several that he looked into.  He will send the list out via email.

Jenny will look into finding a Saturday in April or May for us to “do” Feed My Starving Children.  There were no openings.
Jenny will look to next fall for a Saturday to sign up for Feed My Starving Children

Pastor’s Report:
Lanny is about half way through meeting with the regular attendees.  He has noticed the several people have issues with the church in the past.
He is gaining a sense of what we need as a church that is healing.

Lanny is going to the annual UCC Conference in June.  He will not lead worship on June 11.  Steve is also going to the conference.
Steve and Melissa will lead worship on that Sunday.

Have a healing circle (talking stick used) so each person can speak on.

CHURCH COUNCIL MINUTES
March 12, 2017

The meeting was called to order at 10:55 a.m.

Attending:  Chris Thomas, Nancy McCreary, Jenny Gustafson, Melissa Waskiewicz, George and Bea Potter, Steve Pavich, Lanny Kuester, Cathy

Lanny led the council in an opening prayer.

Clerks Report:  The January meeting minutes were read.  Chris moved to accept the meeting minutes as corrected.  Nancy 2nd the motion.  All approved the meeting minutes.

Treasurers’ Report: Nancy passed out the financial report for January.   Jenny moved to accept the Treasurers’ report.  Bea 2nd the motion.
All approved the Treasurer's report.

Trustees Report:  As of 2/28/17 there was $34,926.76 in the endowment fund.

Moderator’s Report: Chris Thomas
Chris discussed his letter to Connie.  We all agreed that it should be updated;
Lanny suggested the letter was good except that the last paragraph should be 2 paragraphs.

Lanny spoke with Connie about the plans for the sanctuary and mentioned some of the MHUCC concerns.  Connie took the piano but will get the “plate” off of it.  She also said she would replace the piano.  She plans on a floor to ceiling window in the sanctuary.  Connie told Lanny that she is being treated for cancer, so it is assumed the project will probably get started this summer and to get it done as soon as possible.  She has probably already consulted a lawyer.  Some of the council needs to see the plans.  Do the plans say that the sanctuary is a dual-use facility?  Lanny reminded the council that the church is the people, not the building; our future is in God’s hands.  The conference told Lanny we should negotiate on items, keep everything clean and clear and get everything in writing.

Christian Education: Melissa Waskiewicz / Steve Pavich

Steve wants to start the Friday lunches with the Lenten study book he selected.  Melissa will begin using the coloring book

Missions & Outreach:

Open and Affirming Congregation – No updated.  Melissa will talk to Lanny on how he would like to proceed.
Men’s Ministry – There is no update.
Nancy brought up a topic about changing the charity for the fountain of coins since it has been designated to Clare Housing for a long time.  Thoughts captured Interfaith Action or Meals on Wheels.  Nancy moved to make the change to a different charity; Steve 2nd it.  All approved the motion.

Pastor’s Report:   Most of Lanny’s report was covered in the moderator’s report.   Lanny has planned having lunch with Sheri Prestamon, conference minister.  Next meeting, Lanny will discuss options on how MHUCC can move forward.

Old Business:
Steve has looked for insurance plans with a lower premium, but has not found anything lower that what we are currently paying.

New Business:

There was no new business.

The next council meeting is scheduled for March 12 after church.

Steve moved to adjourn the meeting.  The meeting adjourned at 12:10 p.m.

Lanny led the council in an opening prayer.

Trustees Report:  As of 3/31/17 there was TBD in the Endowment Fund.

Moderator’s Report: Chris Thomas
Chris reported that Connie thanked the congregation for the nice letter.
Chris also reported that the plans for the sanctuary were on hold because SonShine needs to update the kitchen first.
We have not seen the plans yet.  There is also a question about what will happen with the banners during construction in the sanctuary.

During Chris’ report, the council talked about some signage for the church.  Steve had looked into some sort of banner and that would cost between $200 and $300.  He passed around a couple examples to see.  We talked about having to put up/take down each Sunday and how it would work in the snow and wind, etc.  Lanny suggested we discuss further on a banner that would work.

Regarding the website, Kathy volunteered to help.  Kathy, Steve and Lanny will meet on the website to make sure all have a common vision.
We also discussed advertising within a 5 mile radius.  Lanny will help with this.

Christian Education: Melissa Waskiewicz / Steve Pavich
Between Steve and George, the Lenten study book on Fridays have all been well attended.

Missions & Outreach:
Open and Affirming Congregation – No updated.  Melissa will talk to Lanny on how he would like to proceed.

Men’s Ministry – There is no update.

The council continues to discuss options regarding a charity to receive the fountain of coins.
Carolyn reported that for the March Minnesota Food Share drive for Neighbors, Inc. was successful.  MHUCC donated 45 pounds of food and supplies for the Food Shelf, a bag of slightly worn clothes for the Clothes Closet, $210 in check donations and 7 bags of grocery bags with handles. Carolyn thanks everyone.
Jenny will look into finding a Saturday in April or May for us to “do” Feed My Starving Children.

Pastor’s Report:   We plan to have a Maundy Thursday service on 4/13 and Easter service.  The Potters will decorate the church.
Lanny has planned having lunch with Sheri P., conference minister.

Lanny spoke about rebuilding the church.  He suggested that we take a targeted approach to figure out the path to take.  The conference has the “Ashley Fund” that could possibly help us.  Lanny plans on meeting with all members of the church regarding rebuilding the church.

On April 23, Steve Boorsma, will attend our church service.  Melissa will plan for a small luncheon after the service.  Jenny will help with set up and clean up.
